Mechatronics Engineer (Field Operations)
Location: Darwin, Northern Territory (Relocation Support Provided)
Engagement: 12-Month Fixed Term Contract
Are you a hands-on engineer who thrives in the field rather than behind a desk? Talent Aligned is partnering with a pioneering marine technology company to find a highly capable Mechatronics, Mechanical, or Electronics Engineer. This is a unique opportunity to work directly with a fleet of advanced vessels in Darwin. You will act as the crucial bridge between on-water maintenance operations and the centralized East Coast design team, ensuring that complex technical challenges are not just patched up, but permanently resolved and meticulously documented.
The Role
This position is dynamic and heavily dictated by the natural environment. With an 8-meter tidal fluctuation to account for, your work schedules will adapt to strict 2-hour launch windows at mid to high run-out. You will be out in the Darwin sun, rolling up your sleeves to troubleshoot, fix, and perform root cause analysis on both mechanical and electronic systems. You will ensure the fleet stays on the water while feeding critical design improvements back to headquarters.
Key Responsibilities
-
Act as the vital technical link between Darwin field operations and the core design engineering team.
-
Troubleshoot mechanical and electronic issues, performing deep root cause analysis to fix systems at their core rather than applying surface-level patches.
-
Meticulously document all fixes, workarounds, and modifications using CAD and other engineering tools.
-
Send complex, unsolvable issues back to the design team equipped with detailed information and clear drawings.
-
Manage hands-on engineering tasks relating to brackets, wiring routing, heat management, friction, and bespoke testing equipment.
-
Roll out new design updates to the fleet, which includes repositioning and rerouting components in the field.
-
Conduct field verification and validation for any system changes.
-
Embrace flexible hours, including long days and occasional weekends dictated by tidal movements, with days in lieu provided.
About You
-
You are an Australian Citizen eligible for NV1 security clearance and ITAR requirements.
-
You possess a degree in Mechatronics, Mechanical, or Electronics Engineering, ideally bringing 6 to 7 years of practical experience.
-
You have a strong hands-on approach and are entirely comfortable performing physical work in challenging outdoor environments.
-
You have a systems-level understanding, enabling you to look beyond surface breakdowns to implement comprehensive, documented fixes.
-
You are highly proficient in CAD or similar software for thorough technical documentation.
-
Knowledge of Linux firmware and microcontrollers is highly regarded but not essential.
The Offer
-
A competitive base salary offered depending on skill level.
-
Relocation assistance for candidates moving to Darwin.
-
Days in lieu for any required weekend work.
-
The chance to work at the forefront of marine technology in a dynamic, field-based environment.
